Why The Utah Jazz Do the Deal
In answering that question, we can frame it in the context of another question first. In the aggregate, would flipping Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell for Jaylen Brown, Jarred Vanderbilt, Malik Beasley, Talen Horton-Tucker, Walker Kessler and four unprotected first-round picks constitute a good summer for Utah?
Sorry for the long sentence. It was due to just how much the Jazz received for Gobert this summer. With that said, a quantity-over-quality approach may not be optimal.
Luckily for Utah, there’s plenty of quality here. Mitchell is comfortably a better offensive player than Brown. He may be slightly more impactful overall. Still, Brown’s two-way prowess keeps him in a similar tier.
Perhaps most importantly, this deal gives the Jazz a different look. After years of failing to advance in the playoffs behind a Mitchell and Gobert pairing, they’ll have overhauled the team entirely.

Most may expect them to rebuild through the draft, but if they flipped Mitchell for Brown, they could flip all of their newfound assets for Brown’s co-star down the line.
There’s more than one way to rebuild in the NBA. If the Jazz took this route, they could return to relevancy in just a short year or two.
