Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
The Brooklyn Nets have regained a bit of leverage after winning their staring contest with Kevin Durant, but they’re still far from a desirable position.
With Durant under contract for four years, they were able to shut down the meager trade packages they were offered, but they don’t hold that same advantage with Kyrie Irving.
The talented but troubled guard’s contract is up at the end of this upcoming campaign, at which point the Nets will lose out on a $36.5 million contract for nothing.
Rather than simply letting his salary come off of the books, they need to be proactive in trying to find the best deal available for a player whose contract and recent history have tanked his value.
LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Kyrie Irving, Brooklyn Nets & Miami Heat Updates
Nabbing essentially two late first-round picks and some tradeable contracts is likely the best deal available for Irving and flipping his expiring contract for any kind of value would be a huge win for the Nets after their fiasco of a season and summer.
Unless they prefer the Los Angeles Lakers’ offer, who have shown an unwillingness to attach picks to shed Russell Westbrook’s contract and bring in Kyrie Irving, the Nets would be wise to accept or even seek out a similar package from the Miami Heat.
