Why The Golden State Warriors Do The Deal
On a surface level, it may seem counterintuitive to trade Draymond in order to save money…for a more expensive contract on a longer-term deal. Let us explain.
Green will be seeking an extension. Here, the Warriors are avoiding paying out his next contract rather than shedding his current one. Following this deal, they can entertain options.
If Simmons works out, it could be Jordan Poole that’s expended next. On a related note, Simmons could well work out. It’s not hard to imagine him replicating Green’s role as a playmaking forward and defensive anchor. Given his relative age and athleticism, he should be an upgrade.
On the other hand, if Simmons doesn’t work out, the Warriors will trade him for expiring contracts to clear their book for Poole and their young core down the line.
