Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal

We can’t stress this enough – this is suboptimal for the Celtics. They won’t do it unless Brown wants out. 

If he does, and it becomes public knowledge, his trade value will decrease. Once again – managing an NBA team is hard. Going from acquiring Kevin Durant to this package is tough. 

On the other hand, there’s still good value here for the Celtics. Sexton equips them with the ball-handling, scoring guard they were missing in the 2021-22 Finals. Following this deal, the Celtics’ guard rotation will be a little bloated between Sexton, Marcus Smart, and Malcolm Brogdon. 

That’s a rich man’s problem. The Celtics can move one leading up to the deadline if it becomes a problem. Meanwhile, they’re also acquiring a solid young defensive wing in Okoro, and perhaps most importantly, two first-round picks and two swaps.

If they’re feeling forced to deal Brown anyway, that’s a solid return for the organization. The Cs would likely take a step backward following this deal, but it could position them to take a bigger step forward down the road.
