Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
Here’s a question – why shouldn’t the Jazz do this deal? Here’s a related question that ought to be answered first – why should the Jazz trade Mitchell in the first place?
To rebuild? Here’s a news flash: Donovan Mitchell is 25. He’s also a star. In other words, he’s the type of player a team can rebuild around. Why not pair him with another star guard to form one of the best backcourts in the NBA?
That’s exactly what the Jazz would have following this deal. Sure, they might not be serious title contenders in 2022-23 following the acquisition of Irving, but landing him should keep them in the playoff hunt.
More importantly, they’ll still have enough assets to trade for another star, or more role players, down the road. If the goal is to build a title contender, pairing Irving and Mitchell to make arguably the league’s best backcourt is a solid start.

It just so happens to put the Jazz on a faster track to that goal than trading Mitchell for a rash of first-round picks.
