Why The Indiana Pacers Do The Deal
This deal is easiest to justify from the Pacers’ point of view. They’re doing it for the first-round picks.
That’s a rational move for a rebuilding franchise, and make no mistake: that’s exactly what the Pacers are. Unlike the Jazz, there is no Donovan Mitchell here to fast-track a rebuild. The Pacers are more than a piece away.
None of which is to say the Pacers aren’t talented. They are. Tyrese Haliburton flashed star potential in his 2021-22 sophomore season, and guys like Bennedict Mathurin, Isaiah Jackson, and others project as strong supporting players for him.
Still, this organization’s focus should be squarely on the future. All of their most important players are well under 25, and they’re not ready to win now. Flipping two veterans in Turner and Hield for draft capital is a great way to prepare for the future.
