A roller coaster ride of an NBA offseason for the Brooklyn Nets seems to be coming to the end of the line. After weeks of rumors following Kevin Durant’s request to be traded, he and the Nets have decided to continue their partnership, for now.

That is excellent news for Brooklyn, as they have a championship-caliber roster with Durant and Kyrie Irving both bought in for the 2022-23 season. Getting to that point certainly took some time, as both players looked for exit strategies out of Brooklyn this offseason.

Before opting into his contract, Irving canvassed the league to see what the chances of him landing a lucrative, long-term contract were. When his market was cold, he opted in knowing that was his best chance of landing a long-term deal next offseason.

Days after he opted in, Durant made his trade request. Speculation ran rampant about why Durant would do that after Irving opted in, as people thought maybe their relationship had deteriorated.

According to Shams Charania, that is not actually the case. While making an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Charania shared that Durant and Irving were actually in constant contact with each other.

“The one guy with the Nets that Kevin Durant had remained in communication with, from everything I’ve been told, was Kyrie Irving. That was the one guy that he was communicating with on a regular basis. …That relationship goes beyond just basketball. I think it’s more a life friendship that those do have.”

For a few weeks, no one could get in touch with Durant. The Nets didn’t know his status and players around the league who were attempting to gauge his interest in teaming up said that he had done dark and wasn’t answering.

Despite all of the rumors, his relationship with Irving seems to be as strong as ever. While the Nets did feel slighted at some points, as they lost leverage constantly throughout the offseason, they did call their bluffs at the end of the day.

Brooklyn, ultimately, was the best spot for the All-Star duo for the upcoming season. The franchise knew that and they shortly realized that as well. While the drama has stopped, for now, things could quickly change depending on how things go in the regular season.
