The Kevin Durant trade saga has officially come to an end. After requesting a trade hours before the moratorium for free agency in the NBA, Durant and the Brooklyn Nets have finally reached a resolution.
Following a meeting on Monday that included Durant, his business manager Rich Kleiman, general manager Sean Marks, head coach Steve Nash and owners Joe Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai, the two sides have decided to continue their partnership moving forward. That means there will be no Durant trade right now and if things go according to plan, he will play out the entirety of his four-year guaranteed deal with the Nets.
While there were plenty of rumors about teams being interested in trading for Durant, it never felt like the Nets were serious about moving him. The proposals that they sent to other teams were outrageous, as they were asking for everything including the kitchen sink.
Ultimately, the Nets got what they were looking for, as they had hoped they would be able to convince Durant to come back and focus on winning a championship with the team. They were seemingly able to do the same with Kyrie Irving after he opted into his contract for the 2022-23 season.
Both Durant and Irving tried playing hardball with the organization this offseason, with Irving canvassing the league for a long-term contract before opting in. Durant’s trade request was followed by an ultimatum given to the franchise about firing Marks and Nash, but their bluffs were called and in both instances, Brooklyn was correct.
There will certainly be some things that need smoothing over, as some relationships likely need to be mended. But, as Marks said in his statement, the focus is solely on basketball going forward.
“We are focusing on basketball, with one collective goal in mind: build a lasting franchise to bring a championship to Brooklyn.”
The Nets have the looks of a championship roster. They were able to re-sign Patty Mills and Nicolas Claxton in free agency. T.J Warren was also signed in free agency and Royce O’Neale was acquired in a trade with the Utah Jazz. With Ben Simmons expected back in the lineup and Joe Harris also returning from an injury of his own, the Nets have a much deeper, talented roster for the 2022-23 campaign.
It will be interesting to see how everything comes together once training camp gets underway in a few weeks. This is a championship-caliber roster, but there are plenty of obstacles the franchise is going to have to navigate throughout the season.
