Whether you prefer this deal or the previous one will likely depend on how much star potential you think RJ Barrett actually has.
On the one hand, this is a 22-year-old who’s already managed to score 20 points per game at the NBA level. Barrett has to be considered a potential star on that basis alone. On the other hand, those 20 points per game came fairly inefficiently.
Furthermore, Barrett hasn’t demonstrated an elite level of skill in any one facet of the game. Still, he’s well-rounded in the sense that he’s solid in almost every aspect of basketball. In other words, Barrett’s case for future stardom is complicated.
All told, it doesn’t matter what we think. It matters what Danny Ainge thinks. If he thinks Barrett has another level to reach, he’ll like this deal.

On the other hand, supposing he prefers draft capital, and the Knicks aren’t willing to give up as much as he likes: In that event, this next three-team deal could suit both the Jazz and the Knicks.
