The Brooklyn Nets offseason took a turn for the better this week when it was announced that Kevin Durant would be rescinding his trade request. The focus of both sides now is on basketball and bringing an NBA championship to the franchise.

For what feels like the first time since Durant’s arrival, there won’t be any drama surrounding the Nets. That can change in an instant, but for now, everything is good. General manager Sean Marks and head coach Steve Nash are likely still under the microscope after Durant called for them to be fired, but they can get to work upgrading the roster and putting together a game plan to help the team win games.

The next order of business for Brooklyn is filling out the roster ahead of training camp. They have six roster spots available right now, including two standard roster spots. Brooklyn still has some of its mid-level exception to use as well, which could make them a very popular destination for free agents.

The center position has been the one seemingly identified as the biggest need currently. Day’Ron Sharpe and Nic Claxton are the only two big men currently on the roster, and they are lacking in experience. Combined, they have started 28 games in their careers.

Relying on only those two heading into the season would be unnecessarily risky for the Nets. Bringing in some veteran insurance would make a lot of sense in case they are not ready to handle a starting role or big minutes off the bench for a team looking to contend and win big this upcoming season.

According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, one player to watch is veteran Tristan Thompson. Thompson started last season with the Sacramento Kings before being traded to the Indiana Pacers. He was bought out by them and finished the season with the Chicago Bulls.

The Nets are looking to add a veteran backup center, league sources told HoopsHype. One free-agent center to keep an eye on is Tristan Thompson, HoopsHype has learned.

Another free agent the Nets reportedly have expressed interest in is Markieff Morris. The initial interest was first reported by NetsDaily, but HoopsHype confirmed it as well.

The Nets have also expressed exploratory interest in forward Markieff Morris, league sources told HoopsHype. NetsDaily was the first to report Brooklyn’s interest in Morris.

Thompson would be a solid addition to the frontcourt for Brooklyn. He has a relationship with Irving, as the two played six seasons together with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Thompson brings a wealth of experience and championship mettle to the table, something no team can ever have too much of.

Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard are two other veterans that have been mentioned as targets for the Nets. But, according to Scotto, the Nets have no real interest in adding either veteran at this point.

It sounds as if Thompson and possibly David Duke Jr., who played last season with the Nets on a two-way deal, have the inside track to securing the final two standard NBA contracts that the team can offer.
