Throughout the last few years, it has become commonplace for NBA players to take part in Pro-Ams around the country. It is a chance for fans in cities without professional teams to watch their favorite players play. Most of these Pro-Ams are free to attend as well, which is a nice selling point for some fans who cannot afford to go to an NBA game.

While the games get intense at some points, they are open runs. Unfortunately, just like in an NBA game, injuries can occur and a pretty serious one may have come about during the Crawsover Pro-Am in Seattle.

Chet Holmgren, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga, was playing in a game there against a team with LeBron James. Holmgren was playing defense against James on a fastbreak attempt and contested his layup at the rim. After the play, he comes away hobbling.

Contests at the rim happen countless times in a basketball game, and unfortunately for Holmgren, this one may have resulted in a serious injury. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, there is fear that Holmgren suffered ligament damage to his foot.

He is getting further opinions, but the early prognosis is certainly not a positive one for the Thunder’s top pick.

Depending on the severity of the injury, the timetables for Holmgren to get back on the court if he did suffer ligament damage varies. A mild injury would have him back in 2-4 weeks, so he would be ready to, albeit likely starting slowly, at training camp.

If the injury is more severe and a cast or splint is required for recovery, the timetable could be 6-8 weeks. While certainly not ideal to miss training camp as a rookie, at least his season wouldn’t be put in danger at that point. He would be cleared to begin activities right as the regular season is getting underway.

The most severe, which would be surgery, could put his season in jeopardy. That timetable is anywhere from 6-8 months, which would mean a return around the All-Star break is the earliest he would be back. If it pushed closer to eight months, the Thunder likely wouldn’t push him and he would miss his entire rookie campaign.

Hopefully, the injury isn’t too severe and Chet Holmgren can get back on the court sooner than later with his new teammates.
