Recent NBA headlines have been focused mainly on the trade talks centered around All-Stars Donovan Mitchell and Kevin Durant. Both players are being shopped by their respective teams and the asking prices are very high. The Utah Jazz would be heading toward a rebuild, while the Brooklyn Nets are looking for pieces to not only help them long-term but stay competitive next season.
A few teams have been mentioned as suitors for both players, with Durant being the main focus. One of those teams is the Atlanta Hawks, who came into the offseason looking to make some major moves to the roster.
They have already accomplished that, as they acquired All-Star point guard Dejounte Murray from the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Danilo Gallinari, three unprotected first-round picks and a pick swap. After that, they traded Kevin Huerter to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Justin Holiday, Maurice Harkless and a future first-round pick.
While the Hawks have accomplished their goal of shaking up the roster, that has not deterred them from making an offer to the Nets for Durant. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, that trade offer has come within the last month.
“Also in the past month, the Atlanta Hawks offered John Collins, De’Andre Hunter and a draft pick for Durant, according to sources.”
Based on what the Nets are looking for in exchange for Durant, that offer is likely near the bottom of the list. Receiving only one draft pick is likely a non-starter for the Nets, especially if John Collins and De’Andre Hunter are the only players heading to Brooklyn in the deal.
Collins has shown All-Star potential, averaging 21.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game during the 2019-20 season. Hunter was arguably the team’s best player during their first-round matchup with the Miami Heat in the 2022 postseason, but his injury history is certainly concerning.
The Hawks are going to have to bring a little more to the table to pique the Nets’ interest. Including their own 2023 first-round pick and one of the two 2024 first-round picks that they own would help. A little more salary would have to head to the Nets. Including one of their recent first-round picks, such as Onyeka Okongwu, Jalen Johnson or A.J. Griffin would send out enough money.
That offer would be a little more competitive, but right now everyone is seemingly chasing the Boston Celtics. They are assumed to be the leaders in the clubhouse after making Jaylen Brown available.
