How This Trade Impacts Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks need to balance out their roster during the rest of the offseason. They have a ton of depth in the frontcourt, as they focused on adding players to fill what they felt was their biggest need at the center position.
However, the backcourt now needs some attention as well. They didn’t think that they would lose Jalen Brunson in free agency, but he departed, signing a deal with the New York Knicks. That has left a huge void in their rotation and depth.
This trade with the Miami Heat fills both. Duncan Robinson can take the 3-point shooting role over from Davis Bertans, but it will come from the backcourt and wing. That alleviates the logjam at power forward, where Christian Wood may be coming off the bench behind Dorian Finney-Smith with JaVale McGee starting at center. Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell both remain on the roster as well.
Josh Green has been buried on the depth chart and could be once again this season with Tim Hardaway Jr. healthy. He is flipped for Gabe Vincent, who brings some much-needed ball-handling and playmaking to the roster. Beyond Luka Doncic and Spencer Dinwiddie, who is the projected starting backcourt, Frank Ntilikina was the only other ball-handler.

Vincent can man the second unit and play stretches alongside Doncic or Dinwiddie depending on how Jason Kidd staggers minutes. He is really the centerpiece of this deal from Dallas’ perspective as they need point guard depth.
A future second-round pick is included as well to make up for Robinson’s contract that has one more season on it compared to Bertans.
