Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal
Some will balk at that proposal from the Spurs’ perspective. After all, they just traded Dejounte Murray for three first-round picks.
Here’s the question: would they have traded him for Ben Simmons and two?
If you think the answer is yes, this deal still makes sense for San Antonio. In all likelihood, it’s only justifiable because they’re getting Simmons at a discount. After all, he’s been largely unavailable for the last two years due to a series of mental and physical health concerns.
Those concerns remain prevalent. On the other hand, they may allow the Spurs to still bottom out in 2022-23 and maximize their lottery odds.
