There were added complications to the Suns’ pursuit of Deandre Ayton being a restricted free agent this offseason. He ultimately signed a four-year, maximum contract offer sheet with the Indiana Pacers, which the Suns decided to match.
With the Brooklyn Nets not being interested in paying Ayton a maximum contract, there wasn’t a pathway for the Suns to negotiate a trade straight up. Phoenix would surely need to find a way to involve a third team as a trade partner to help them actually pull off a deal for Durant.
Without Ayton being an eligible, appealing option for the Nets, finding an enticing talent that fits around Ben Simmons would help. Perhaps the Suns and Nets could get bold. Like, really bold. Bold enough to land both Durant and Kyrie Irving in “The Valley.”
