Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
As with any proposal involving Julius Randle, the Mavericks are taking a gamble. At this point, we don’t know who the real Julius Randle is.
If the Mavericks got the 2020-21 version, they’d be getting a perfect co-star for Doncic. That version of Randle was one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA. His ability to space the floor for the Slovenian superstar while making plays for himself and others while Doncic needed a break would be perfect for Dallas.
On the other hand, if they got the 2021-22 version, they’d be in trouble. Randle regressed from “elite” to “atrocious” from three-point range last season.
Hopefully, such a regression isn’t sustainable. In all likelihood, Randle will split the difference between the two seasons in 2022-23.

Meanwhile, he’ll benefit from the defensive attention that Doncic draws. We’ve never seen Randle as a second option: He may just make a good enough Robin to be included in a title run.
