Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
The New York Knicks use the same rationale to justify this deal that they’ve used to make most of their decisions lately. It improves their cap situation, and it increases their draft capital.
Granted, it doesn’t do much for the former goal. In fact, Bertans is the only player on this deal who is on a distinctly bad contract. On the other hand, it’s far from immovable, and it’s for about $7 million less than Randle’s annual salary.
Meanwhile, Powell is an expiring deal. All told, the Knicks’ books get significantly cleaner by moving off of Randle. With that said, that’s not their main incentive for completing this trade.
Realistically, they’re in it for the draft capital. A first-round pick and a swap is a great return for a player who performed as Randle did in 2021-22.
