Detroit Pistons

The last time that Draymond Green was heading toward a new contract, the Detroit Pistons emerged as a potential landing spot. It would have been a homecoming for him, as he grew up in Saginaw, Michigan about 90 minutes outside of Detroit and played collegiately at Michigan State in East Lansing.

It has been reported that Green doesn’t want to leave the Golden State Warriors, which is understandable. They have had a ton of success, and seeing things through to the end with one franchise is certainly appealing.

However, that kind of homecoming, mixed with the potential to offer a max contract, could be enough to persuade Green to leave the Warriors.

The Detroit Pistons can easily create enough space to offer Green a max contract during the 2023 offseason. If they need more space, Nerlens Noel and Alec Burks both have team options, and declining them would clear just over $21 million total. Kelly Olynyk also has a non-guaranteed contract for the 2023-24 season.

LATEST NBA NEWS AND RUMORS: 1 Major Reason Draymond Green Could Leave Golden State Warriors

The Detroit Pistons would benefit greatly from adding someone like Green to the roster. He brings a ton of leadership and championship experience that a young roster like this lacks.

Young big men such as Isaiah Stewart, Jalen Duren, and Marvin Bagley III would have a great mentor to learn from. Even players that aren’t in the frontcourt would benefit from having him on the court.

If the veterans are moved on from, the oldest player on the roster heading into free agency next offseason could be Isaiah Livers, who is currently 24. Green would be a great addition to help this young Detroit Pistons team continue developing and provide the team with a veteran voice to learn from.
