Heading into the offseason, many people presumed that the Boston Celtics would be relatively quiet. They had just advanced to the NBA Finals, losing to the Golden State Warriors in six games. Their roster was strong from top to bottom as changes on the fringes were all many expected.

Following his trade from the Atlanta Hawks to the San Antonio Spurs, Danilo Gallinari was waived. It didn’t take him long to find a new home, as it was reported he was heading to the Celtics almost immediately. He will provide the team with some secondary scoring in the frontcourt with the second unit.

Speaking of the bench unit, they will also have a new floor general leading them. The Celtics acquired Malcolm Brogdon from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith, Nik Stuaskas, Malik Fitts, Juwan Morgan and a 2023 first-round pick.

Brogdon provides the team with some more size in the backcourt, as Payton Pritchard was sometimes picked on by opponents in the postseason. He is a capable 3-point shooter and someone that will complement Marcus Smart well at the point guard position.

It wouldn’t have surprised anyone if the Celtics called it a day on the player acquisition front at that point, but they may not be done. In fact, a blockbuster trade could be on the horizon according to recent reports.

Almost out of nowhere, the dormant Kevin Durant trade talks have picked up considerably. The Celtics have emerged as serious contenders according to The Athletic.

“As of right now, the Celtics have emerged as a serious possibility as a landing spot for Durant. They have tremendous interest in bringing him and view him as a piece that could take them over that final hurdle. Although there is work to be done, there is a deal to be had that would suffice the Nets’ overwhelming ask.”

This comes as somewhat of a surprise as the Celtics haven’t previously been mentioned as a landing spot for Kevin Durant. Trading him to a division rival, especially one that just swept you out of the first round of the playoffs, would be a little bit shocking to see.

But, if Boston can present Brooklyn with the best trade package, they will accept it. That was always the goal for the franchise in these negotiations. They wanted the best package possible regardless of which team it came from.
