The 2021-22 season was a breakout one for Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams. He had been a part of the team’s rotation since being selected No. 22 in the 2019 NBA Draft but really took advantage of an expanded role this season.
Williams played in a career-high 77 games, starting 11 of them and averaging 24.4 minutes per game. He was an integral part of the team’s rotation in the frontcourt, as he was the only true power forward in the rotation.
His floor spacing ability was key, as Williams connected on 41.1 percent of his 3-point attempts during the regular season and 39.3 percent during the postseason. He set career-highs in the scoring and rebounding departments as well, with 7.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.
Now eligible for an extension this offseason, the two sides will have until the first day of the regular season to hammer out a new deal. Earlier this week, Keldon Johnson of the San Antonio Spurs signed a four-year, $80 million deal and there are some that believe that deal is a table setter for what Williams could look for from the Celtics.
However, there is skepticism that Boston would be willing to approach that price tag for Williams. While an important part of the team, paying $80 million for a player who primarily comes off the bench is a steep price to pay. The Celtics are going to be cutting back the minutes of Al Horford next season, but even with more playing time heading his way, $20 million annually is a lot.

You also have to take into account the team-friendly deal that the Celtics worked out with fellow young frontcourt member Robert Williams III. Williams signed a four-year, $48 million deal and has blossomed into a very good starting center.
Executives around the league believe that deal could be a benchmark for Grant Williams as they are unsure the Celtics would go above what Robert Williams III received last offseason. These rookie extensions are not always so cut and dry, as Grant Williams looks like it will take some time to sort out.
