Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
Let’s be honest – adding Eric Gordon to a 34-win team does not likely make them an NBA champion.
With that said, it should get them closer to their goal. That’s true whether the Lakers are able to move Russell Westbrook (as they’re heavily rumored to be interested in doing) or not.
If they’re stuck with Westbrook, this deal ought to at least improve his performance. In 2021-22, the Lakers were desperate for floor-spacing. Gordon provides it in droves. With that said, this deal doesn’t destroy the Lakers’ chances of moving Westbrook either.
Granted, using that 2027 first-rounder could be the best way to move him. Still, the Lakers could offer a 2026 swap and an unprotected 2029 first-round pick to get off Westbrook’s contract.

Yes, that series of moves would leave them with the worst collection of draft capital in the NBA. If they’re serious about competing for a title in 2022-23, that won’t be a priority for them.
