How This Trade Impacts New Orleans Pelicans
This would be a historic trade for the New Orleans Pelicans to make. They have had some solid teams throughout the history of their franchise, but this would be the first time that they would be in a position to legitimately contend for a title.
Adding Kevin Durant to this roster would make the Pelicans instant contenders. Good luck slowing down him and Zion Williamson, who are fifth and third in career points per 75 possessions. If you think you have them figured out, don’t forget that CJ McCollum is still there as likely the best third option in the NBA.
There are certainly some risks in making a deal like this one. Durant hasn’t been able to stay healthy in recent seasons, which has been an issue for Williamson as well. But, that is what would make McCollum so important, as he can carry the team in their absence.
New Orleans likely isn’t on Durant’s list of preferred teams, but this would present him a chance to improve his legacy if that is important to him. Some of his accomplishments are diminished based on the circumstances around them, but leading the small market Pelicans to a title would certainly change the tune when it comes to his legacy.
LATEST NBA NEWS AND RUMORS: Why Pelicans’ Brandon Ingram Is Ideal Nets’ Kevin Durant Trade Target
Trading Brandon Ingram wouldn’t be an easy decision, but there have been some discussions about how good of a fit he is alongside Williamson. If the front office and coaching staff decide it won’t work out, flipping him as part of a package for Durant makes a lot of sense.
Devonte’ Graham’s minutes could be soaked up by Kira Lewis Jr., who is returning to the lineup after suffering a torn ACL in December, Jose Alvarado and rookie Dyson Daniels. Surrendering three draft picks barely puts a dent in their war chest of assets compiled from the Davis and Jrue Holiday trades.
