Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal
The Charlotte Hornets would be parting with a lot of draft capital here. Some will argue that they’re jumping the gun.
After all, this team lost in the play-in tournament in 2021-22. Meanwhile, for some deeply unfortunate reasons, they’ll be losing a key rotation player in Miles Bridges. Shouldn’t they be prioritizing the draft?
Well, they’d surely be lucky to draft a player as good as Donovan Mitchell. At 25, he’s still an appropriate acquisition for a rebuilding team. The Hornets would rationalize this trade the same way the Hawks justified trading for Dejounte Murray – only Mitchell and Ball actually fit together on paper.
Of course, this would be a risky move. If it doesn’t pan out, the Hornets could be a mediocre team without the draft capital to improve.

In a worst-case scenario, that could mean eventually needing to trade LaMelo Ball. In all likelihood, for an intriguing young player and a first-round pick.
