Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
It wasn’t long ago that the Brooklyn Nets were the ones sending out an insane amount of draft capital to acquire a star. Now, the Houston Rockets own control of their draft through to 2027.
Many fans will say that, for this reason, the Nets can’t bottom out. Once again, we’ll accuse them of being a little closed-minded.
Yes, if the Nets did tank, they’d likely be conveying a quality pick to the Rockets in 2024. Otherwise, it’s not the end of the world. They have a swap with the Rockets in 2023: given that Houston will probably be among the league’s worst teams, the Nets’ selection would have a high floor.
Past 2024, they’ll surely hope to be in a position where their picks convey outside of the lottery anyway.

Meanwhile, this is a lot of draft capital. Surely, it’s enough to make the Nets think twice. After all, with Durant approaching the end of his career, there’s no guaranteeing that 2026 first-rounder won’t convey in the lottery.
In fact, if they made this deal, the Nets will have just taught themselves that lesson firsthand.
