Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
Rumor has it that the Brooklyn Nets are seeking a young All-Star caliber player and at least three first-round picks in exchange for Durant. If they’re rigid in that asking price, this deal won’t fly.
They shouldn’t be. LaVine isn’t merely a young All-Star caliber player. He’s a young fringe All-NBA player. They won’t get a better player than Durant in any trade, since there are only two or three players who have a case for being designated as such.
They also likely won’t get a better player than LaVine. Meanwhile, he’s squarely in his prime at 27. With that said, the much younger Patrick Williams holds a lot of intrigue. If he can overcome the injury concerns that have plagued him in his career thus far, he could be one of the best 3-and-D wings in the league.
The Bulls don’ have the draft capital to satisfy that part of the Nets’ expectation. They should make an exception if they’re adding LaVine and Williams. On a pure value basis, it’ll be hard to do much better than this for Durant’s services.

This deal allows the Nets to stay competitive and improve their future outlook. On the other hand, it could turn the Bulls into a full-blown contender.
