Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
By contrast, the New York Knicks don’t need to worry about their draft capital. They’ve got plenty to spare.
That’s not to say they should be giving out first-round picks like cars at an Oprah Winfrey taping. Still, if they’re high on Collins’ upside, parting with one that’s likely to convey late in the first round ought to be worth their time.
Collins and Randle may play the same position, but they’re vastly different players. Randle is a superior ball-handler and playmaker, and when he’s on, he’s a better shooter as well. On the flip side, when he’s off, he’s a far worse one.
Collins is a more consistent threat from downtown. Furthermore, he’s a vastly superior athlete. His otherworldly athleticism makes him an elite finisher in pick-and-roll action. He also uses his lateral mobility to be a better defender than Randle, albeit an average(ish) one.

In other words, Collins is a more complementary player than Randle. If the Knicks are out on the latter’s star potential, this deal is worth their time.
