Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
This summer, the Knicks have had two apparent priorities so far. They’ve looked to clear cap space, and increase their quantity of draft capital.
Most observers assume that they’re clearing that space to add Jalen Brunson in free agency. With his dad on their coaching staff, that looks like a more probable outcome every day. Still, that doesn’t procure them from adding Donovan Mitchell.
In fact, his addition would give them one of the more talented offensive backcourts in the league. If Julius Randle took a step towards regaining his 2020-21 form, this deal could make the Knicks a real player in the Eastern Conference next season.
There’s a possibility the Knicks would prefer to offer a more draft-focused package and keep Barrett. After all, this is a win-now move for them, and Barrett is already a productive player. Still, if the Jazz insist on his inclusion, the Knicks shouldn’t hesitate.

If they’re lucky, they can use their remaining draft capital to make another roster upgrade elsewhere.
