Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal
While the New York Knicks would be committing to free agency and trades as a means to improve with this trade, the San Antonio Spurs would be rebuilding through the draft.
They couldn’t be changing to that course at a more opportune time. The 2023 draft has the potential to be historic. If the lottery balls really bounce the Spurs’ way, they’ll land the first overall pick. That would have them selecting Victor Wembenyama, which would be a franchise-changing event.
Otherwise, this class remains stacked with high-end options. Scoot Henderson is the most anticipated point guard prospect in quite some time. The Thompson twins look like hyper-athletic guards/wings that could be franchise players. Dariq Whitehead, Derrick Lively, and others make this class worth bottoming out for.
It may be the best way forward for this club. The Spurs have missed the playoffs for three straight seasons. It may be time for a dramatic change. Although Murray is breaking out, the opportunity to move forward with one of those prospects may be too tempting for the team to pass on.
