Why The Philadelphia 76ers Do The Deal
First of all, the Philadelphia 76ers probably don’t do the deal. Realistically, they won’t be looking to part with Maxey this summer.
Still, there could be some upside here. Say what you want about Irving, but he is one of the most talented human beings to ever play basketball. As great as Maxey is, he’s go a lot to prove before anyone could throw the same superlatives his way.
Realistically, Philly’s interest here may depend on their intel on Irving. If he’s motivated to prove that he can be a reliable teammate in 2022-23, this could be something they were tempted by. The last time he teamed up with Harden in Brooklyn, his unreliability appeared to rub the Beard the wrong way (if you’ll pardon the pun).
We’re quite sure the two could let bygones be bygones. Furthermore, pairing them in a backcourt alongside a dominant center like Joel Embiid could be interesting. If everything clicks, it could make the Sixers serious title contenders in 2022-23.

With that said, Maxey would need to take another significant step forward before we could say the same about the Nets following this deal. Would they take a win-now downgrade in order to move on from Irving?
