Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
Make no mistake: this is a gamble for the Dallas Mavericks. They could be giving up two rotation players and a first-round pick for nothing.
Parting with Brunson could prove especially difficult. He emerged as a fringe star in 2021-22. If Kyrie Irving doesn’t routinely show up to play for the Mavericks, that will be a tough pill to swallow.
Nonetheless, the potential upside here is huge. An engaged, active Kyrie Irving paired with Luka Doncic could make for the best offensive duo in the NBA. His ability to provide both on and off-ball value makes him a perfect fit alongside the Slovenian sensation.
That same upside simply doesn’t exist with Brunson. If he hits his absolute ceiling, he won’t approach Irving’s abilities. If the Mavericks see that potential and decide they can’t pass up on it, that shouldn’t shock anybody.
