Utah Jazz fans could be forgiven for reading this and getting angry. Why should the Indiana Pacers get a first-round pick for Malcolm Brogdon?
Well, for one thing, Brogdon is 5 years younger than Conley at 29. Furthermore, his superior positional size makes him a defensive plus. Conley, for all of his effort, is too small to thrive on that end of the floor. He is regularly a liability.
Basically, Brogdon is a better trade chip. He’d also be perfect for this Boston Celtics squad. He can relieve Tatum and Brown of shot-creating duties when needed, and space the floor for them otherwise. Like Conley, he’s a smart decision-maker who’s unlikely to generate the same unforced errors that sunk the C’s in the Finals.
As for the Indiana Pacers, they’re probably ready to cut ties with the talented combo guard. At last year’s trade deadline, they acquired the very similar, much younger Tyrese Haliburton. Having drafted Bennedict Mathurin, they’ll want to get a look at their backcourt of the future in 2022-23.
