Los Angeles Lakers Receive: F/C Al Horford, G Derrick White, 2023 First-Round Pick (BOS)
Boston Celtics Receive: F/C Anthony Davis
Any decision the Los Angeles Lakers could make this summer ties directly to what happens between them and Russell Westbrook.
In all likelihood, they’d prefer to find him a new home. His fit alongside LeBron James proved to be as poor as the most pessimistic fears suggested it might be. On the other hand, his massive contract, relative to his production, could render him untradeable.
If the Lakers are stuck with Westbrook, they ought to construct a roster that fits with his unique skill set. This deal helps to that end. Horford is a more reliable floor-spacer than Davis. As much blame as Westbrook deservedly shouldered last year, having a big who can shoot better than 16.9% from three-point range would have helped him.
Furthermore, Derrick White is a nice complement for Westbrook. He’s a smart decision-maker, a solid defender, and a capable floor-spacer. In other words, he offsets several of Westbrook’s shortcomings.
