Why Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
The Brooklyn Nets have two good reasons to do this deal. One relates to the present, and one relates to the future.
In the present, Al Horford feels like an ideal stretch big man to pair with Ben Simmons. As a non-shooting ball-handler, Simmons needs to be surrounded by floor-spacing to maximize his strengths. Horford’s 36.0% career accuracy from distance will be helpful.
In the future, they’re acquiring Jaylen Brown. That speaks for itself. Brown and Simmons can be the foundation of a quality NBA team for a decade. That could be an intriguing scenario given the uncertainty surrounding Kyrie Irving.
Again, none of this is likely unless Irving decides he actually wants to depart. Durant has already seen James Harden leave. Irving following suit after Nets management chose not to commit to him could be a motivating factor to leave.

Crazy things happen all the time in the NBA. It wasn’t overly expected that Durant and Irving were going to team up on the Nets too long before it actually happened either.
