Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: G Derrick White, F/C Daniel Theis
Boston Celtics Receive: G D’Angelo Russell
With this deal, the Wolves would be acquiring Theis to fill the same role we described for Horford in the previous slide. In some ways, Theis is merely a poor man’s Al Horford.
Of course, Derrick White would be the main appeal of this trade for the Wolves. He’d replicate much of Russell’s shot creation. Realistically, this is a two-for-one for the Wolves. They’re sacrificing the best player in the deal in exchange for depth.
It could also be a case of addition by subtraction. It’s heavily rumored that the team is interested in dealing Russell. It feels likely that they’d be motivated to do so in order to feature Towns and Anthony Edwards in their offense more prominently.
From that point of view, they may prefer not to acquire White. He’s a score-first guard, so he’s unlikely to aid the cause of maximizing Towns and Edwards.
