Washington Wizards Receive: F Doug McDermott, G/F Josh Richardson, G/F Devin Vassell, 2022 First-Round Pick (No. 9 – SAS), 2025 First-Round Pick (SAS)
San Antonio Spurs Receive: G Bradley Beal
In comparing these first two deals, the question is this: what are the odds of a first-round pick yielding a player as good as Devin Vassell?
If the Washington Wizards are high enough on his potential, they could reason that they’re unlikely to find a player of his ilk with the San Antonio Spurs’ 2023 selection.
That would be a justifiable position. Vassell has every appearance of the type of versatile, 3-and-D wing that the Wizards will eventually need when they’re ready to compete again. At 21, he’d have every opportunity to grow with this franchise as a pivotal part of their rebuild.
At the same time, Vassell may be a future role player. That’s fine, but it would be understandable if the Spurs intended to aim a little higher in terms of incoming young players.
