In the NBA, it’s sometimes better to be at the bottom than in the middle. Just don’t tell that to the San Antonio Spurs or the Washington Wizards.
The Spurs have missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. One would hope they’d have a premium lottery pick to show for their shortcomings. One would be mistaken. The Spurs have been bad, but they haven’t been bad enough.
Much of the same criticism could apply to the Wizards. For the better part of a decade, they’ve been in and out of the playoffs. They just haven’t made it out of the second round since disco was an emerging trend.
Both of these squads could stand to pick a direction and commit to it. Either make a win-now trade and put all your eggs in a basket or rebuild.
