Anthony Davis ought to help this team’s porous defense in an instant. Granted, he won’t singularly fix it. No player in NBA history would likely be up to that task.

Similarly, this deal won’t take the Rockets from basement dwellers to NBA champions in an instant. For the Rockets, this trade is about a return to respectability. It could allow them to attract the type of free agents over the next couple of years that will actually land them back in the title mix.

Granted, it’s a risk. Davis is a staple on injury reports. His body has been failing him for two seasons, and there are no guarantees that he can fix the problem.
