How This Deal Impacts Utah Jazz
The Utah Jazz could have their hand forced this offseason when it comes to trading their All-Stars. They would love to hold onto and build around Donovan Mitchell, but if they feel the same as the reports, that he will eventually look to get traded, they could look to get out ahead of things.
Malcolm Brogdon, when healthy, and Buddy Hield will help them remain competitive in the coming seasons. However, this trade package is lacking a young, high-upside young player for the Jazz to build around for the future; both players turn 30 in December.
The first-round picks are nice, especially the No. 6 overall pick in this year’s draft. Utah could push for one of the two first-rounders that Indiana has in 2023 instead of the swap, or even ask for ones further down the line. If Mitchell is dead set on finding a bigger market, he may not be long for Indiana.
At the very least, they are getting two first-rounders to help what will eventually turn into a rebuild. But, it is hard to imagine that the Jazz won’t get better offers from other teams. The Miami Heat have a 22-year-old Tyler Herro they can make the centerpiece of a deal, while the New York Knicks have an emerging soon-to-be 22-year-old RJ Barrett.
