In this exchange, Julius Randle is coveted for his contract more than his on-court production.
Really, he’s a conduit for the Chicago Bulls to receive some value from Zach LaVine. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent, so they’d be tremendously lucky to acquire two first-round picks for him in a sign-and-trade. LaVine would be well within his rights to leave without making these arrangements.
On the other hand, as lucky as the Bulls get here, it’s arguably a coup for the New York Knicks. Of course, two first-round picks make for no small price, but they’re receiving a star. The fact that they’re getting off of a big-money, long-term deal they may regret handing out is a substantial bonus.
Of course, all of this assumes that Zach LaVine has an interest in suiting up in the Big Apple. He may not. If LaVine is intent on playing somewhere else, this deal loses its legs immediately.
