This definitely feels like one of those deals that could go one of two ways for the Spurs.

If Johnson blossoms into a star in New York, it’ll probably adversely affect the value of tha first-round pick. If that happens, and the Spurs fail to resuscitate Randle’s career, this could go down as an incredibly lopsided deal.

On the other hand, if Randle blossoms under Pop’s tutelage, and Johnson’s production has already plateaued, it could look lopsided in the opposite direction. Both scenarios feel plausible.

In other words, it’s a gamble! That also makes it off-brand for the Spurs. If you’ve been following this organization for a while, you know that gambling isn’t generally their style.

With that said, it may be time for the Spurs to do something different.
