New York Knicks Receive: C Jakob Poeltl, F Doug McDermott, 2022 First-Round Pick (No. 20 – SAS)
San Antonio Spurs Receive: F Julius Randle
New York Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau loves rim protectors. We know this to be true. This deal poses a question: How much does Tom Thibodeau love rim protectors?
After all, some will look at this deal and think the Knicks are getting the short end. We’d argue it’s not so black-and-white. Poeltl may not be as big of a name as Randle, but he’s one of the better defensive big men in the NBA.
There’s no question that Thibs would love him. Getting the sweet-shooting McDermott and a first-rounder is an added bonus.
With all that being said, in a straight-up value sense, this may not quite cut it for the Knicks. Randle may be a distressed asset, but he’s only a season removed from All-NBA honors.

If the Knicks won’t budge on this offer, the Spurs should have something else up their sleeve. It’ll be costlier, but it may also be closer to fair.
