New York Knicks Receive: C Myles Turner, G T.J. McConnell
Indiana Pacers Receive: F Julius Randle, 2023 First-Round Pick (NYK)
This deal may not keep in the spirit of retooling for the Indiana Pacers. At the same time, it may be too beneficial to pass up.
It allows them to walk a fine line between retooling and rebuilding. How far they veer in either direction will probably depend on which Julius Randle they get. If it’s the 2020-21 version, they may end up better for making this trade, with a draft pick to show for it. If they get the 2021-22 version? Well, at least they ought to improve their lottery odds.
The only reasons the Pacers consider parting with Turner are the emergence of Jalen Smith and Isaiah Jackson. Both are significantly younger, and each has flashed starter potential. With this deal, they alleviate their glut of centers in addition to adding Randle and a pick.
For the New York Knicks, this deal has significant ramifications. The acquisition of Turner allows them to explore sign-and-trade possibilities with soon-to-be Restricted Free Agent Mitch Robinson. They could add more value there. They’re also getting a quality backup point guard in McConnell.
