The Indiana Pacers are “rebuilding” this NBA offseason, but they’re not really rebuilding. At least, that’s what team president Kevin Pritchard would like you to believe.
He publically declared that this team would “retool”, decrying the notion that they’d “tear it down”.
It’s an admirable stance, but it’s also a practical one. The Pacers play for a rabid home crowd. The state of Indiana loves basketball. They’re also one of the smallest market teams in the league. They need to keep those fans satisfied.
They say good is the enemy of great, but if that’s true then great must be the enemy of good as well. The Pacers are normally content to chug along as a competitive team, even if they don’t have real championship aspirations.
