From a pure fit perspective, the last deal ought to have suited the Minnesota Timberwolves better. This trade is a pure talent grab.
That doesn’t mean it won’t work. If Randle can split the difference between his superb 2020-21 three-point accuracy and his atrocious 2021-22 mark, he should be able to find his way within the flow of this Wolves offense.
In that event, these Wolves could be dangerous. An offense built around Towns, Edwards, and Randle could be unguardable if everyone is clicking.
Meanwhile, the Knicks cut ties with Randle to start over. This deal may not galvanize their fanbase, but getting an unprotected first-round pick for a distressed asset is a win.

Plus, losing Randle could be a case of addition by subtraction. With a step forward from RJ Barrett next year, they could field a more competitive roster than the one they had in 2021-22.
