Oklahoma City Thunder Receive: F Luka Samanic, 2022 First-Round Pick (No. 11 – NYK), 2023 First-Round Pick (NYK), 2025 First-Round Pick (NYK)
New York Knicks Receive: G Luguentz Dort, 2022 First-Round Pick (No. 2 – OKC)
If any team is likely to poo-poo the second overall pick in an (arguably) weaker draft class, it’s got to be the Oklahoma City Thunder.
That holds doubly true if they can flip it for (you guessed it) more first-round picks. That’s been General Manager Sam Presti’s MO since Russell Westbrook skipped town. Here, he continues hoarding picks in preparation for some kind of apocalyptic event.
On the other hand, the Knicks may opt to land a star-caliber prospect now. The mutual interest in this deal speaks to the relative market sizes of each team. The Knicks may feel that, after landing one of Holmgren, Smith Jr., or Banchero, they’ll be able to build through trades and free agency.
The Thunder know their best shot at acquiring top-end talent is through the draft. Top-tier free agents aren’t normally eager to move to Oklahoma City. With this deal, they maintain their strategy of maximizing draft capital.
