Making the Case: Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers finished 22nd in the league this season shooting 34.7% from three-point range. James was able to dominate when he was on the floor, but the team struggled with depth elsewhere.
Gary Trent Jr. shot 38.3% from deep this season. This is around his average since coming into the league. This might not be a move that brings the Lakers a championship on its own, or is it?
The main issue with the Lakers this season was their priorities. Russell Westbrook was not the only veteran brought in. Los Angeles added Carmelo Anthony as a bench piece and he turned back the clock a bit at times. Overall, a lack of shooting around their main pieces was too much to overcome.
There’s increasing smoke surrounding the possibility that Westbrook will be back with the Lakers. If that happens, it’s essential to bring in a sharpshooter and Trent Jr. fits the bill. Parting with a future first-round pick to add talent is better than using it to move off an expiring contract.
