New York Knicks Receive: G Russell Westbrook, 2025 First-Round Pick (LAL)
Brooklyn Nets Receive: F Julius Randle, F Evan Fournier, 2027 First-Round Pick (LAL)
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: G Kyrie Irving
Once again, a third team gets involved strictly to land Russell Westbrook’s expiring contract and a first-round pick.
The New York Knicks may be having some buyer’s remorse after signing Randle and Fournier to big-money contracts. Neither lived up to their price point in 2021-22. With this deal, they clear their books for 2023 free agency.
Plus, it feels like the New York Knicks would actually use Russell Westbrook. They do need a point guard. If they could land a stretch big, maybe they could get more out of him than the Los Angeles Lakers. After all, they don’t have a LeBron James he’ll struggle to fit with.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn makes this deal with the hopes that Randle can regain his 2020-21 Most Improved Player form. If he can regain his touch from three-point range, he could be a lethal small-ball 5 alongside Ben Simmons.
