It seemed like the mercurial point guard had grown tired of being in LeBron James’ shadow. Certainly, the kid from Akron casts a long one. Irving rightfully felt he was talented enough to command his own team.
Hearts and minds are prone to change. Shortly after, Irving apologized to James publically. Leading an NBA team, he seemed to have learned, required more than just talent.
His career since then has only demonstrated that principle. In 2021-22, he missed most of the season due to a refusal to get a COVID-19 vaccine.
