Houston Rockets Receive: F/C P.J. Washington (Sign & Trade), G James Bouknight
Charlotte Hornets Receive: C Christian Wood
There was a time when a deal like this would feel unrealistic. That would have been some time before James Bouknight averaged a mere 9.8 minutes per game in his rookie campaign for the Charlotte Hornets.
Obviously, something kept them from putting him on the floor. Still, the abilities he flashed as an isolation scorer in college basketball have to count for something. At 21, he’s exactly the type of gamble the Houston Rockets should be taking.
P.J. Washington is a great get for them also. He’s a versatile two-way forward who spaces the floor. At 23, he could be a key rotation piece for this Rockets club when they’re ready to start winning again.
Meanwhile, the Charlotte Hornets get their center. Granted, they were probably looking for one with a stronger defensive presence. It might not matter. This team was already ninth in Offensive Rating (114.94) in 2021-22. With Wood’s ability to either roll or pop effectively alongside LaMelo Ball, it should challenge for best in the league.

This is a steep price for the Charlotte Hornets to pay. Still, they’re rumored to be in cap clearing mode, and Washington may stand to make more money in free agency than Wood. If they’re low on Bouknight, it could be a price worth paying.
