Making the Case: Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks view themselves as a team that is built on defense, not just the individual play of Luka Doncic. It showed in their first-round series win over the Utah Jazz.
For the Mavericks, the quickest method to raise their floor as a defense would be to add an elite rim protector that sets the tone on the inside like Rudy Gobert. His 7-foot-9 wingspan enables him to be quite a dangerous lob threat for an elite playmaker, too.
There are limitations to Gobert’s offensive game that could be amplified by how teams take to drastic measures to guard Luka Doncic. Teams could switch everything after going small and bank on Gobert’s limitations not making them pay.
If the Jazz were to seek Spencer Dinwiddie in a trade for Gobert, the Mavericks would need to quickly do what it takes to retain Jalen Brunson in free agency.

Perhaps a larger question at hand is, would the Mavericks rather give up less in a trade to land a player like Myles Turner who makes substantially less than Gobert? Or, is Gobert the piece they want to push the chips into the center of the table for?
